COVID-19 Booster Shot Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Who is eligible for an additional dose of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine?

A: The CDC recommends those with moderate to severe immune compromise due to a medical condition or treatment at least 28 days after their 2nd dose. If you are unsure if your condition falls under this category, please discuss with your primary care physician.

Q: Who is eligible for a booster shot of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine?

A: The CDC recommends people 65+ and residents of long-term care settings should receive a booster shot at least 6 months after their Pfizer or Moderna primary series.

The CDC recommends people aged 50-64 with underlying medical conditions such as but not limited to cancer, chronic kidney disease, pulmonary disease, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, pregnancy, and heart conditions should receive a booster shot at least 6 months after their Pfizer or Moderna primary series.

The CDC recommends people aged 18-49 with underlying medical conditions may receive a booster shot at least 6 months after their Pfizer or Moderna primary series.

The CDC recommends people aged 18-64 who are at increased risk for COVID-19 exposure and transmission because of occupational or institutional setting may receive a booster shot at least 6 months after their Pfizer or Moderna primary series.

Q: What is the difference between additional dose and booster shot?

A: A COVID booster shot is an additional dose of a vaccine given after the protection provided by the original shot(s) has begun to decrease over time. Typically, you would get a booster after the immunity from the initial dose(s) naturally starts to wane. The booster is designed to help people maintain their level of immunity for longer.

A third dose of the mRNA COVID-19 vaccines (Pfizer or Moderna) is identical to the first two doses. It can help protect people with weakened immune systems who did not have a strong enough response to the first two doses of one of the mRNA vaccines.

Q: Can I receive a booster shot if I received my primary series of Johnson & Johnson?

A: Those 18+ who have received a dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine are eligible to get a booster after 2 months of receiving their first dose of Johnson & Johnson.

Q: Can I mix and match COVID-19 Booster Dose?

A: The CDC has approved the use of "mix and match" COVID-19 booster doses.  This means you may choose which vaccine you receive as your booster shot as long as you have completed the primary series of either Pfizer or Moderna or received the single dose of Johnson & Johnson.
